Presented by
Dr Rachel Giles, Medicom
Conference
ERS 2023

European Respiratory Society International Congress (ERS 2023), held in 9-13 September 2023 in Milan, Italy. The topics discussed are:

  1. Eosinophilic asthma: Most patients on benralizumab can successfully taper inhaled corticosteroids
After 32 weeks, a reduction of high-dose inhaled corticosteroids/formoterol (HD ICS/F) was possible in 92% of patients, who had been stable on benralizumab. This lower dosage was maintained to week 48 by 95.8%.
  2. Maturation of the gut microbiome protects against allergic manifestations in early childhood
Babies and infants with a mature gut microbiome are less likely to develop allergy-related wheezing and asthma in early childhood. This showed a subgroup analysis including 323 babies of the Australian Barwon Infant study.
  3. Pulmonary fibrosis: a new treatment on the horizon?
BMS-986278 reduced percent predicted (pp) FVC decline in patients with progressive pulmonary fibrosis (PPF). Results were similar between groups with or without background therapy.
  4. Sotatercept: Promising long-term results in PAH treatment
Extended sotatercept as an add-on treatment for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), showed sustained maintenance of benefit in a long-term open-label extension. The safety assessment indicated low treatment-related discontinuation.
  5. Idrevloride augments pulmonary function in patients with primary ciliary dyskinesia
The treatment of primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) patients with a combination of idrevloride and hypertonic saline (HS) resulted in significant improvement of percent predicted (pp) FEV1 compared with saline alone or placebo after 1 month. The treatment did not lead to evidence of hyperkalemia.
  6. Possible treatment targets to reduce fatigue in COPD patients discovered
New data found that higher pain levels and poor sleep quality were among the factors that significantly influenced the intensity of fatigue. Other relevant factors were shortness of breath and fatigue-catastrophising.
